COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's cross country teams concluded the 2001 season at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships Saturday, Nov. 10. The Lumberjacks scored 201 points to finish eighth while the women scored 330 for a 13th-place finish.
Sophomore Nathan Flores (Kingwood, Texas) paced the Lumberjacks, crossing the line with a 31:15 time. That mark was good enough for 19th overall and won him all-region honors. Sophomore Justin Meier (Lorena, Texas) was the second Lumberjack to cross the line. He finished 32nd overall with a time of 31:54.
The Ladyjacks were paced by sophomore Ana Rodriguez (Dallas, Texas). She clocked a 22:27 time for 39th place. Junior Melanie Pate was the second Ladyjack to cross the finish line. Pate finished 80th overall with a time of 24:03. Less than 30 seconds behind Pate were sophomore Vicky Jannise (83rd) and freshman Emily Hufstedler (88th).
"It was a solid performance by the guys," said SFA head coach Alex Gibby. "Our race this year was an improvement from last season, but I felt that we were a little flat from (the Southland Conference Championships). This race was more of a beginning for the women and I thought we did okay. Ana Rodriguez ran real well for us and I think she will be a frontrunner for SFA in the years to come."
