SFA Drops Two In Monroe

MONROE, Louisiana -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team fell to 6-36 overall, and 2-12 in Southland Conference play after dropping both ends of a Southland Conference doubleheader to the Indians of the University of Louisiana - Monroe (11-21, 4-7) Thursday afternoon in Monroe. The 'Jacks lost game one, 1-0 and fell in the nightcap by a 4-0 final.
Devin Cobb (3-11) took the loss in game one giving up only one run on four hits in five innings of work. She also struck out two and walked one batter. The Indians scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter Lori Tandee singled followed by a double off the bat of centerfielder Kristen Baker. Tandee scored on the play and Baker was thrown out at third base trying to stretch the hit into a triple.
The 'Jacks could not manage a hit off Ashley Bellew (4-9) and were no-hit for the sixth time this season.
SFA managed to pick up four hits in the second game, but still could not push across a run as the Indians handed the 'Jacks a 4-0 loss. Meryl McGuire, Brooke Chandler, Mimi Van Ryn and Sarah Stone, the top four in the batting order all picked up one hit each, but only managed to get more than one hit in only the third inning. With two outs, McGuire singled to right field, followed by a Chandler single. With runners at the corners and trailing 1-0, Van Ryn flied out to right to end the threat.
Traci Moore (3-14) took the loss in game two, working five innings, allowing four runs on three hits, striking out one and walking two. Only one of the four runs was earned.
The series wraps up Friday afternoon with a single game starting at 1:00 p.m.
