NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Northwestern State Demons (31-20, 15-5) showed why they are among the leaders in the Southland Conference Saturday afternoon with a pair of wins over Stephen F. Austin (7-42, 3-16) on the softball diamond, winning game one by a 10-1 final and completing the doubleheader weep with a 6-1 decision in game two.
SFA could managed only the single run in game one in spite of picking up seven hits. The 'Jacks left seven runners stranded in the opener, including the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Trailing 4-0 entering the fourth, Brooke Chandler opened the inning with a single and was moved all the way to third on a pair of sacrifice bunts. Pinch hitting for Kacie Rees, Yvette Bass drove in Chandler with a single to center field. Catcher Sarah Stone followed with a single of her own and B.J. Cruff reached base after being hit by a pitch. The inning ended with a fly ball off the bat of Meryl McGuire.
Traci Moore (4-19) worked four innings for SFA in the opener, giving up six runs on seven hits before giving way to Devin Cobb. Cobb was roughed up for four runs on eight hits in two innings of work. Cobb surrendered back-to-back homers by Northwestern State's Lindsay Leftwich and Erin Mancuso in the fifth inning.
The Demons did all the damage in game two in the third inning, scoring all six runs on six hits in the frame. The 'Jacks managed to push across a run in the fourth inning when Eric Henrion started the inning with a single off Demon pitcher Amanda Ortego. Henrion was moved to second on a sacrifice by Mimi Van Ryn, and scored on an RBI single by Brooke Chandler.
Moore took the loss in game two as well, going the distance, giving up six runs on 12 hits.
The teams wrap up the three game series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
