THIBODAUX, Louisiana -- The Colonels of Nicholls State completed a three game sweep of the SFA softball team Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 shutout of the 'Jacks behind the four hit pitching of Nichole Wagner. SFA (9-46, 3-20) put together four hits off Wagner, but could not push across a run, stranding four base runners in the game.
Traci Moore (5-21) took the loss in the series finale in spite of allowing only one earned run while working six innings and scattering six hits. She struck out three and walked two Nicholls State batters. Meryl McGuire, Mimi Van Ryn, Brooke Chandler and Sarah Stone all managed a hit off Wagner, but the 'Jacks could never put hits together to push across a run.
Nicholls State also took games one and two of the series Saturday behind strong pitching, winning game one, 3-1 and taking game two by a 3-2 final. The Colonels (15-39, 7-17) came from behind in both games for the wins.
In the series opener, Moore held a 2-1 lead going to the bottom of the sixth inning before walking Monica Hebert with one out. The next batter, Duffi Matherne, homered to make it 3-2. Game two went extra innings before the Colonels scored a run in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Devin Cobb (4-14) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings of work.
The 'Jacks take a break from Southland Conference play Tuesday as they play host to the University of Houston in a non-conference doubleheader at the Coy Simms Softball Complex beginning at 5:00 p.m.
