
SFA Drops Pair To UH In Softball

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference with the University of Houston Wednesday afternoon by scores of 12-2 and 6-2. The losses drop the 'Jacks to 9-48 on the year.
Houston broke open the first game with a ten run third inning from which the 'Jacks could no recover. SFA did manage to push across runs in both the fourth and fifth inning to avoid the shutout. Devin Cobb (4-15) took the loss allowing 12 runs on 16 hits in five innings of work. Houston had five doubles in the first game of the doubleheader. B.J. Cruff and Cobb picked up the RBIs for SFA as Cruff went one for three on the afternoon with the run driven in. Cobb went one for two at the plate as well.
Game two was a different story as Traci Moore (5-22) held UH to only two runs through the first six innings of play. Houston scored a pair of runs in the third inning on a two-run homer off the bat of catcher Arelis Ferreris.
SFA countered with two runs in the fifth inning after Sarah Stone singled to lead things off. Devin Cobb followed with a hit into right field. Third baseman Kacie Rees then moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Yvette Bass was struck out by Houston pitcher Jamie Falco, but Meryl McGuire came through with a two out double to score both runs and tie the game at 2-2.
Houston came through with four runs on five hits off a tiring Moore in the top of the seventh to sweep the doubleheader with the 6-2 win.
The 'Jacks close out the 2002 season this weekend at home with a Southland Conference series with the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m. with a single game Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. to wrap things up.
