Sauntry Leads Charge As SFA Posts Best Finish Of Spring

WICHITA, Kansas --The Lumberjack golf team posted its lowest round of the spring Tuesday, shooting a final round 286 at the Wichita State Shocker Classic at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kan. to move into a tie for third place in the tournament. SFA entered the day in fifth place and moved up two spots to tie Washington State for third place with three round totals of 881.
Trevor Sauntry, a freshman from Houston, set a course tournament record with a final round 62 to move into second place individually. Sauntry recorded seven birdies and an eagle in the final round to post what is believed to be the lowest tournament round in SFA history. It is the lowest round by an SFA golfer since moving to the Division I level. Sauntry shot rounds of 72-73-62 to finish at six under par, 207 for the tournament and finished four shots back of tournament champion Gibby Martens of UT-San Antonio. UTSA won the team title with a three round total of 859.
The second place finish is Sauntry's third top five finish of the spring.
Jason Alexander, a senior from Bellville, finished third in the tournament with rounds of 70-69-72, for his best finish as a Lumberjack. Brent Gurley rebounded to shoot a final round 74 to go along with rounds of 80-78 on the first day of play to finish in a tie for 54th. Walt Schroeder finished one stroke behind Gurley with rounds of 79-76-78, for 56th place. Warren freshman, J.P. Landry also shot three rounds in the 70's, shooting 78-79-79, to finish in 60th spot.
SFA closes out the 2002 season next week at the Southland Conference Golf Championships at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Canton. Play begins Monday and continues through Wednesday. The tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
