Grossman Leads SFA Golf To Third Place Finish

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team shot a final round 279 - its lowest round of the year - and finished third at the 40th annual SLC Golf Championships at Canebrake Golf Club in Hattiesburg, Miss. SFA finished seven strokes back of second place UT-San Antonio, and nine strokes behind 2003 champion, Lamar.
Brian Grossman, a freshman from Mansfield, shot a final round 66, the lowest round of his collegiate career and finished in second place for individual honors with rounds of 70-71-66. J.P. Landry, a sophomore from Warren, shot a final round 70 and finished at even par, 213 with rounds of 72-71-70, good for a tie for fifth place.
Trevor Sauntry, a sophomore from Missouri City, also finished in the top ten, tying for seventh with a three day total of 214, one over par. Sauntry shot rounds of 72-72-70. Josh Price, a freshman from Marble Falls, closed with a final round 73 and posted an eight over par total of 221 for the three day event. Price shot 75-73-73 in his first appearance at the conference championship. Justin Foust closed out play with a 78 Wednesday and finished with rounds of 75-78-78 in his first action at the conference tournament.
The 'Jacks entered the final 18 holes of play tied for second place with UT-San Antonio seven strokes back of Lamar. The Roadrunners edged the 'Jacks by seven shots with a final day round of 272, the lowest round of the event. Lamar shot a final round of 277, paced by Matt Larson's 67. The Cardinals have won three straight SLC golf titles.
SFA's three round total of 855 is the lowest three round total at the SLC Championships since joining the conference. The 'Jacks have won the SLC title on three different occasions with the last tournament title coming in 1999. The three round total of 855 by SFA would have won every conference tournament held since 1986.
