HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's golf team broke a 26-year tournament record to win the 2009 Sam Houston State Invitational at the Elkins Lake Golf Club Tuesday afternoon. The 'Jacks shot a notable seven-under par 561 to outpace the competition by five strokes. The tournament, which was originally schedule for 54 holes, was shortened to 36 due to poor weather conditions in the area. The Lumberjacks score (272-289 - 561) broke the record that was originally set by Sam Houston State in 1983.
"The guys came here ready to play," said SFA head coach Trey Schroeder. "We still have some things that we need to work on, but we accomplished everything we came here to do. It is a great honor to have set a new course record, considering how young we are."
Sophomore Stetson McMillan and freshman Mitchell McLeroy both posted career-low rounds of 67 helping the 'Jacks secure a first-place spot after Monday's round of action. McMillan finished second in the overall standings, just missing the individual title by two strokes. McMillan fired a 67-71--138 to finish four-under par.
Senior Matt Oates was fifth overall after carding back-to-back one-under par rounds (70-70--140). Coming off his redshirt season, junior Ricky Wilkenfeld came up big with an eighth-place showing. Wilkenfeld recorded a one-under 68-73-141 for his second-career top-10 finish. After finishing the opening day with a five-under par 67, McLeroy struggled a bit on the final 18 with a five-over 75. He finished the tournament 10th overall with a 67-75--142. Freshman Austin Green carded rounds of 73-75 to finish tied for 21st overall.
The Lumberjacks will take two weeks off before returning to action in the Carter Plantation Preview in Hammond, La. The two-day tournament will begin Monday, Nov. 2.
