'Jacks Finish Eighth at Louisiana Tech

CHOUDRANT, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team shot a six-over 294 in the final round of the LA Tech Squire Creek Classic Tuesday afternoon to finish eighth overall. The Lumberjacks recorded a three-round score of 294-295-294 - 883 on the par-72 Squire Creek course.
The Lumberjacks' youth led the way as freshmen Austin Green and Mitchell McLeroy led the attack. After shooting a three-under 141 on the opening day of the tournament, Green struggled a bit Tuesday afternoon recording a five-over par 77, but his two-day score (218) was low enough to lead SFA. McLeroy finished four strokes off Green's pace. McLeroy saved his best round for last firing a two-under 70 (76-76-70 - 222). Green finished the tournament tied for 16th overall, while McLeroy was tied for 36th in the individual standings.
Diboll senior Matt Oates recorded a 72-74-76 - 222 to finish tied with McLeroy for 36th overall. Oates recorded one of five par, or better rounds for the 'Jacks at the tournament.
Junior Michael Smith improved by four strokes on the final day with his even-par 72. Smith posted a 224 to finish tied for 41st overall. Classmate Kyle Robbins was the fifth Lumberjack overall. Robbins carded a 74-77-76 - 227 to finish tied for 54th overall.
The Lumberjacks return to action Monday, Oct. 12, when they will compete in the Sam Houston State Invitational. The two-day tournament will be the fourth competition in as many weeks for SFA.
