WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Ladyjack tennis team came up just short on Friday after a long trip to the East Coast, falling to Rollins College 5-4 in the first of back-to-back matches in the Sunshine State.
SFA (1-6) picked up wins from its top two players - Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho - in both singles and doubles play, but the Tars (2-0) justified their No. 15 ranking in Division II by taking three of the final four singles matches, and stealing two of the three doubles matches.
"It was an exciting match," head coach Bret Arrant said. "Our girls played very hard, but just came up a little short."
Scoring was done on a nine-point scale since RC is a Division II school, with each doubles match counting as a point.
Enica evened up her season record at 3-3 in No. 1 singles by knocking off the Tars' No. 1 player, Holly Fleming, although she had to come back to do it (4-6, 6-0, 6-4). Shazkho followed that up with a straight set win over Roshni Luthra (6-1, 7-6 (3-0)) in No. 2 singles to run her season mark to 4-2, the most wins of any Ladyjack so far this year.
Tatiana Smolnikova was the only other Ladyjack to pick up a singles win, cruising to a (6-2, 6-3) win over Allie Steele in the No. 5 slot.
Sanjana Kapur and Jamie Williams each went the full three sets in No. 3 and No. 6 singles before falling in their respective matches.
Enica and Shazkho also teamed up to earn their fourth win of the season at No. 1 doubles with a 9-7 win over Margaret Junker and Kayli Ragsdale.
SFA plays at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Stetson before returning home to open up SLC play beginning Saturday at McNeese State.
