'Jacks Improve on Final Day

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team carded a 299 Tuesday afternoon in the final round of the UTA Waterchase Invitational to finish 12th overall. The 299 was the team's lowest round of the tournament, which allowed SFA to jump two places in the standings finishing 12th overall (300-302-299 - 901).
"I was proud of how the guys battled back today in the final round," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "Unfortunately, we were unable to recover from a very slow start, which is disappointing considering how well we played in qualifying.
"I thought Michael (Smith) played a lot better today, and Mitchell (McLeroy) was consistent all weekend. I think he is more confident now that he has a tournament under his belt. Unfortunately, we had to accept a 79 in the final round and that always hurts."
Junior Kyle Robbins recorded his second-straight even par round to finish the tournament with a three-over par 219. Robbins score was low enough to place him tied for 13th overall. SFA had two players tie for the second lowest round on the team, junior Michael Smith and freshman Mitchell McLeroy, but unfortunately they were seven strokes off Robbins' pace. Smith recorded a 77-76-73 - 226, while McLeroy carded a 78-73-75 - 226.
Junior Ricky Wilkenfeld shot a 79 on the final day to finish 84th overall. He finished with a three-round score of 75-81-79 - 235. Sophomore Stetson McMillan struggled on the final day with an 83. He finished tied for 85th overall with a three-round 237.
The Lumberjacks return to action Monday, Sept. 28, when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the ORU Shootout.
