
'Jacks Climb to Fourth

SPRINGFIELD, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team improved by three strokes Tuesday compared to its opening round score, and is currently fourth overall at the 2010 Southland Conference Championships. SFA carded a six-over 294 at the par 72 Carter Plantation course and is only one stroke back of third place entering Wednesday's final round of action.
The 'Jacks grouped all five players within four strokes of one another led by junior Kyle Robbins. The Southlake, Texas native appeared to be in for a long day after recording a double bogey on eight and nine to fall to one over. But Robbins battled back to record two birdies on the back nine to finish at even par. Robbins is currently seventh overall only six strokes back of the leader.
Junior Michael Smith and Stetson McMillan are currently tied for 12th with a two-round 149. Smith was four over heading into the final four holes, but recorded birdies on 15 and 18 to finish the day with a two-over 74. It was a similar story for McMillan who birdied two of the final five holes to finish the day three over.
After struggling with a five-over 77 on the opening day, freshman Mitchell McLeroy battled his way up the leaderboard with a one-over par 73 Tuesday morning. McLeroy enters the final round tied for 20th overall. Freshman Austin Green is currently tied for 27th overall with a 75-76 - 151.
The Lumberjacks return to action Wednesday for the final round of action at the conference championships. SFA is slated to tee off at 8:40 a.m.
