CORINTH, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team defeated North Central Texas College and Collin College Saturday afternoon to run their win streak to eight matches to start the 2011 season.
"Doubleheaders are tough for us this year with just six players," head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "So we stepped on the court understanding that we had to take care of business efficiently and we did a good job of that."
The Ladyjacks matched up against the Lions in a 10 a.m. match blowing away NCTC, 5-0. Meagan Ocanas and Alice Pacaut began the winning the streak with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Shortly after that, SFA swept all the doubles point taking the next two matches.
Similar to Thursday's win over Prairie View A&M, it was the lower third of the Ladyjacks' singles lineup that put the match out of reach. Pacaut defeated her opponent quickly winning 6-0, 6-1, and No. 5 singles to give SFA a 2-0 lead. Ocanas gave SFA a 3-0 advantage with her straight-sets shutout victory at No. 6 singles. Alina Shazhko and Paolo Montuenga picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles respectively for the final score. The other two matches were halted to accommodate the second match of the doubleheader.
The Ladyjacks then headed to Plano to take on the Collin College Cougars. The Ladyjacks were dominant once again winning 7-0. After sweeping the doubles, surrendering only four games out of all three matches, freshman Ksenia Berestetska won the first singles match, 6-2, 6-0. Montuenga finished the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win sealing the 7-0 win for the Ladyjacks.
"Being able to jump out to big leads also allowed us to implement some of the things that we have been working on in practice, particularly in doubles, in low-pressure situations and I was very pleased with both our effort and execution," Sullivan said. "Things get a lot tougher starting on Wednesday against McNeese, but the team is excited to get the chance to reap the fruits of their labor and show how far that they have come since last season."
The Ladyjacks travel to Lake Charles, La Wednesday to take McNeese State beginning at 1 p.m. It will be the Ladyjacks 2011 Southland Conference opener.
