LUFKIN, Texas - Stephen F. Austin senior Mitchell McLeroy fired an eight-under par 136 Monday afternoon to take the lead in the 2012 Lumberjack Crown Classic. As a team, the Lumberjacks fired a six-over 582 to take a commanding 12-stroke lead into the final day of action from the par 72, Crown Colony Country Club.
"I'm extremely happy with how we played in the opening two rounds," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "I thought Mitchell (McLeroy) came out and set the tone this morning and never let up. He followed that up with an even stronger second round. Blake (Pugh) really pushed him for most of the day. I was also pleased with the way our individual players competed today. We've put ourselves in a very strong position for tomorrow."
The Lumberjacks opened the day nine strokes better than the rest of the field firing a 290 in the opening round of action. SFA was led by senior Mitchell McLeroy and sophomore Blake Pugh who each carded a one-under 71. The duo entered the second round in a three-way tie for first, and were two of only three players to come in under par in the opening round.
McLeroy added to his lead in the second round posting a seven-under par 65, despite carding a bogey on the final hole. He takes a five-stroke lead over Pugh into Tuesday's final round of action. Pugh finished the day alone in second place with a three-under par 141.
Freshman Luke Sheehan and Bradley Phelps closed the opening round only three strokes back of McLeroy and Pugh to finish the round tied for eighth. Sheehan finished the day just inside the top 10 with a seven-over par 151 (74-77) to place ninth. Phelps struggled in the second round with an eight-over 80. He currently sits in a three-way tie for 16th.
Freshman Major Monzingo struggled to find his rhythm throughout the day recording an 86-80 - 166. He enters Tuesday's second round in 38th place.
SFA also had three individuals on the course Monday who enter the final round fighting for a spot in the top 10. Austin DeWitt recorded the lowest two-round score of all individuals with a 76-74 - 150 and is tied for seventh. Freshman Brady Ellis is tied for ninth with a 76-75 - 151. Cody Wing is tied for 14th only two strokes back of Ellis.
SFA will step back on the course Tuesday for the final round of action at Crown Colony. The teams are scheduled to tee off at 8:15 a.m.
