Lumberjacks Win 2012 Crown Classic

LUFKIN, Texas - Stephen F. Austin senior Mitchell McLeroy fired a 10-under par 206 Tuesday afternoon to win the 2012 Lumberjack Crown Classic on the par 72 Crown Colony Country Club Course. McLeroy recorded rounds of 71-65-70 to win the event and was one of two players to shoot par or better at the two-day tournament.
The Lumberjacks followed McLeroy's lead taking the team title with a 290-292-300 - 882, winning the tournament by 21 strokes over rival Sam Houston State (299-295-309 - 903).
"I'm extremely pleased with how we came out today and finished off the Crown Classic," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "This is a huge confidence boost heading into our last fall tournament. You always want to play well on your home course, and that is what we did today.
"It is unbelievable how important Mitchell's leadership is to this team both on and off the course. I knew I could count on him, and Blake (Pugh) to give us a boost at the top of our lineup."
Pushing McLeroy for the individual title every round was sophomore Blake Pugh. Although he struggled with a three-over par 75 in the final round, Pugh joined McLeroy as the only two players to card a par or better score for the two-day, three-round tournament. He finished second overall with a 71-70-75 - 216.
The Lumberjacks were so dominant over the course of the three rounds, they were hurt by accepting a 79 on the final day of competition, and finished with four players among the field's top 10. Freshmen Luke Sheehan and Bradley Phelps closed out the competition with a 230 to finish in a five-way tie for ninth.
Classmate Major Mozingo was the fifth member of the team and recorded his best round Tuesday morning. Mozingo carded a 79 to finish the tournament tied for 34th (86-80-79 - 245) overall.
SFA also had strong play from its three individual players. Sophomore Austin DeWitt finished sixth overall with a 226. Classmate Cody Wing struggled a bit on the final day but held on to finish among the top 15. He closed out the tournament with a 234. Freshman Brady Ellis was tied for 20th with 238.
