Lumberjacks Finish 11th at Miramont Invitational

BRYAN, Texas - Stephen F. Austin shaved nine shots off its opening round total, but the Lumberjacks weren't able to make up any ground, finishing 11th at the Miramont Invitational. SFA posted a 6-over 294 in round two, finishing the weather-shortened tournament with a 21-over 597.
The Lumberjacks were led by junior Luke Sheehan's even-par 72 over the final 18 holes, finishing tied for 23rd overall with a 3-over 147 following his opening round 75. Sheehan was two strokes better than senior Blake Pugh's 5-over 149, tying for 30th after notching a 4-over 76 in round two.
The highlight of Tuesday's final round was junior Nathan Weant, who had the most dramatic improvement of any player in the tournament. After posting a 9-over 81 in round one, Weant shot a 3-under 69 in round two, an improvement of 12 strokes, closing out the event with a 6-over 150.
Sophomore Baxter Ward (9-over 153) and freshman Tony Underwood (18-over 162) closed out the Lumberjack scorecard, shooting a 7-over 79 and a 5-under 77, respectively.
Beginning Tuesday in a three-way tie for 11th with Houston Baptist and Louisiana-Monroe, the Lumberjacks were unable to make any headway in the team standings, finishing two strokes back of the Huskies (19-over 595) as SFA missed its second top-10 finish of the season. SFA finished five shots better than 12th-place UT-Arlington (26-over 602) and was 13 shots better than 13th-place Louisiana-Monroe (34-over 610).
Houston used an 8-under 280 over the final 18 holes to cruise to the team championship with an 11-under 565. The Cougars defeated second-place UT-San Antonio (5-over 581) by 16 strokes and were 22 shots better than third-place Columbia (11-over 587). Four teams tied for fourth overall at 12-over 588, including Rice, Sam Houston State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas State.
After a month-long hiatus between its first two tournaments of the fall season, SFA will now compete in three events in three consecutive weeks. Up next for the Lumberjacks is a trip to Ruston, La., competing in the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate Oct. 20-21.
