VERO BEACH, Fla. - Stephen F. Austin had another solid showing through the first two rounds of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate as the Lumberjacks sit eighth among the 15-team field. SFA posted a 4-under 572, giving the Lumberjacks six-straight sub-300 rounds.
Competing against a stacked field, SFA's momentum from last week's second-place finish seemed to carry over as the Lumberjacks shot a 7-under 281 in round one and were tied for fifth in the team standings. The opening round was highlighted by junior Nathan Weant's 5-under 67, setting a new career-best for the transfer. Junior Luke Sheehan posted a 2-under 70 while sophomore Baxter Ward carded a 1-under 71 to pace the Lumberjacks.
Round two saw SFA slip slightly, adding 10 shots to their first round total to post a 3-over 291. Senior Blake Pugh responded from a shaky opening round to shoot a 3-under 69 in round two with Sheehan notching an even-par 72.
Sheehan leads the Lumberjacks after two rounds with a 2-under 142, sitting tied for 15th in the individual standings. He holds two-shot lead over both Weant and Pugh who are tied for 25th overall with an even-par 144. Ward is at 1-over 145, tied for 33rd, with sophomore Cory Brown posting a 5-over 149 to round out the SFA scorecard.
The Lumberjacks are one of eight teams that sit under par through the first 36 holes as just eight strokes separate first from eighth. SFA leads both Connecticut and Bowling Green (3-over 579) by seven shots heading into Tuesday's final round while sitting two shots back of both Kentucky and Michigan State (6-under 570).
North Florida (12-under 564) is the team leader after two rounds, holding a two-shot lead on host McNeese State (10-under 566). Jacksonville and TCU are tied for third (9-under 567) with Tennessee (8-under 568) rounding out the top-five.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. CT as SFA will be teamed up with Michigan State and Connecticut in the final round pairings. Live scoring is available at BirdieFire.com with full results posted to SFAJacks.com as they become available.
