SFA Takes Home Opener 5-2 Over NMSU

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Four different Ladyjacks picked up a singles win, as the Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis (3-4) team picked up a 5-2 win over New Mexico State in their home opener at the Schlief Tennis Complex on Friday.
“I am very excited for the progress that we have had as a team in the last three weeks,” head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. “The girls continue to fight hard and it was great to finally be able to play at home with our crowd. We are certainly appreciative of all the spectators that cheered for our team every step of the way.
“I also want to thank our support staff, from trainers to our grounds crew. This was certainly a team effort considering the weather was not cooperative and we are certainly thankful for all the help that allowed us to successfully run the event”
The Ladyjacks got off to a quick start, as the pairings of juniors Malena Gordo and Julia Lorca and freshmen Denise Maxl and Macarena Acosta picked up victories to secure the doubles point. Maxl and Acosta knocked off Denise Van Der Ben and Susana Alcaraz of NMSU (4-6) 8-1, while Gordo and Lorca picked up an 8-5 win.
In singles play, Maxl cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alcaraz, with Gordo, Lorca and senior Laura Servise following suit. Gordo won 6-4, 6-4, as Lorca’s and Servise’s respective matches went into tiebreakers. Lorca won 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) and Servise won 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
SFA will be back in action Friday, Mar. 7, when the Ladyjacks head to Louisiana-Lafayette.
