FRISCO, Texas – Three Stephen F. Austin men’s golfers have been recognized as All-Southland Conference performers, announced today by the league office. Junior Blake Pugh was named a third team All-SLC selection while junior Bradley Phelps and sophomore Luke Sheehan were tabbed honorable mention selections.
"I'm very proud of all three of them as they each are very deserving," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "Those three were the steady workhorses of the team this year. They were our consistent 1-2-3 guys and their leadership led to our strong production and gave us a chance at a conference championship. The exciting thing is all of them are back next year, so I'm expecting more great things from them."
Pugh notches the second All-SLC honor of his career after being named to the second team in 2013. One of just two Lumberjack golfers to compete in all 12 events, Pugh led the team with a 73.97 scoring average with 15 rounds of par or better, including a career-low 67. The Southlake native posted three top-10 finishes on the year, including his first collegiate tournament win at the UIW James Litz Memorial, and finished among the top-20 eight times on the year.
Phelps and Sheehan each pick up the first conference accolade of their career as both played a key role in a memorable season for the ‘Jacks. Phelps ranked third on the team with a 75.06 scoring average over 11 events, including 11 rounds of par or better highlighted by a 3-under 69 on three occasions. The junior from Colleyville recorded three top-10 finishes, highlighted by his third-place showing at the Moe O’Brien Intercollegiate, while capping the year tying for eighth overall at the SLC Championships.
Sheehan emerged as a constant for SFA, ranking second on the team with a 74.47 scoring average while competing in all 12 events on the year. Shooting a low round of 68, he fired 10 rounds of par or better on the season and finished among the top-two on the SFA scorecard in eight events, leading the team on four occasions. The sophomore from Cypress posted a pair of top-10 showings and seven top-20 finishes, highlighted by his seventh-place tie at the Harold Funston Invitational.
The trio helped guide SFA to a solid 2013-14 season as the ‘Jacks notched six top-five team finishes with a 296.33 scoring average. SFA notched its first team tournament championship by capturing the UIW James Litz Memorial on Mar. 10-11 before tying for third at the SLC Championships, its best finish since 2003. As a team, SFA combined for 12 top-10 and 27 top-20 individual tournament finishes on the season.
The 2014 All-Southland Conference teams were voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
