NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin received their fourth win of the season over the LSU-Shreveport Pilots on Wednesday night. Five Ladyjacks found themselves with double digit points after the 40 minutes of play. Junior redshirt Stevi Parker led the Ladyjacks with 16 points on the night, while senior Taylor Ross followed right behind with 14. Both senior Adrienne Lewis and senior Brentney Branch had 12 points apiece, and then freshman Riley Harvey had a terrific game sinking 11 points for SFA. Another highlight of the matchup would be the anticipated return of sophomore Chanell Hayes to the floor. She would have six points on the night, both from beyond the arch. SFA as a team was 53.7% for shots in the field and would be 13-19 at the line.
Ross would break the glass first with a short jumper in the paint, followed by a post-up from Lewis at the 8:37 minute mark. Ross and Lewis tacked on a couple more points for the Ladyjacks before Branch would sink a three to put SFA up by double digits, 17-6. The Pilots then put two on the board, but couldn’t stop the back-to-back three-point possession from Branch and Parker. LSUS then put up an 11-2 streak that closed the gap to a two point game. Hayes and Harvey both attempted to put another basket on the board before the end of the first, but could not get one through.
Branch fired off the second quarter with a quick jumper from the wing, but an ill-timed block from Lewis would give the Pilots two free shots from the line. LSUS then got a layup and two more free throws to make it a one point game, 27-26 with 7:35 left in the half. A great defensive rebound by Parker cut the Pilots score streak and saved the SFA lead. The Ladyjacks then put up six points from Branch, Parker, and sophomore Kennedy Harris. LSUS could smell the go ahead goal as the Pilots cut the score back down to a one point game, 33-32, at the 4:34 minute mark. The two team would duke it out, until freshman Alaysia Ready took the steal, got it to Harvey, who dumped it off to Parker for the easy layup and the nine point lead again. Going into the locker room at the half, the score would be 44-40, SFA.
After the intermission, the Ladyjack came out with guns blazing. Junior Taylor Jackson sunk her first three of the game in the first six seconds of the third quarter. Her second would come two minutes later to help the Ladyjacks take another ten point lead. SFA then went on a 9-2 streak with the bucket and the And-1 from Ross at the 4:12 minute mark. SFA continued to dominate in the paint, as well as on the defensive side as they held the Pilots scoreless for three minutes. Hayes finally got her points on the board in the third, sinking a swish from behind the arch, but it would be the bucket and And1 from Parker that would seal Ladyjacks 20 point lead.
SFA took four minutes off the clock in the fourth before Branch found her second three of the night. The scoring would stay low in the fourth with a lot of turnovers and defensive rebounds on wide shots. Sophomore Kia Fisker got several attempts at the line, before Harvey closed the game with an assist from Ready, to put SFA up 93-56 at the buzzer.
Stephen F. Austin will be back in action on Saturday on the road in Arlington, Texas. SFA will face UTA at 2:00 p.m. CT.
