NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team was unable to hand Southland Conference leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi its first setback of 2016 as the Ladyjacks fell 7-0 to the visiting Islanders at the Schlief Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
“All of the credit goes to the Islanders today,” said head coach Jon McLaughlin. “They came in and truly believed they could win and that proved to be the difference in today’s match. We have to keep out chins up, move on and fight that much harder on Saturday.
With the loss, SFA’s record dips to 10-7 and 4-3 in league play while the Islanders rise to 16-0 and 7-0 in SLC tilts.
Liza Aginskaya and Dhanielly Quevedo were the only SFA players who captured set wins in singles play. Playing in the number six singles flight, Aginskaya took a brief 1-0 lead over Kerry Galhos, but the Islander reeled off two-straight 6-0 wins in the second and third sets to take the match.
Quevedo knotted things at one set each in her battle at number-two singles with Jelena Dzinic with a 7-6 victory, but Dzinic completed the Islanders’ shutout with a 10-8 win in a super-tie breaking third set.
Valeria Terentyeva held a brief lead over Judet Vives in the number-three singles bout, but Vives came back to take a 6-4, 6-4 win. Two other Ladyjack freshmen – Lauren Hidalgo-Smith and Vanesa Calvo Pardo – grabbed leads over their opponents only to see the Islanders come back and capture two-set wins.
“There were definitely some good things to take out of today’s match, but our freshmen could not maintain the momentum they gathered up over the past few matches,” McLaughlin said. “They showed that great fighting spirit we expect from them to take a lead, but finishing off matches against great competition is something that can only come with experience and that’s something they are learning to do.”
SFA will try to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon when the Ladyjacks take a trip to Lake Charles, La., for an 11 a.m. Southland Conference match against McNeese State.
