Gaby Garcia's Two-Run Homer Propels SFA to an Opening Day Win over Lafayette College

LAFAYETTE, La.- Stephen F. Austin defeated Lafayette College, 5-1 Friday afternoon. SFA improves to 1-0 while Lafayette College falls to 0-1.
SFA got the bats going in the top of the first with three consecutive baserunners after Camryn Middlebrook singled to right center, Madison Nguyen singled to left field, and Gaby Garcia walked to load the bases. However, the Lumberjacks were unable to get anyone across home plate in the first. Lafayette College got the first run on the board after a walk and a triple to make it 1-0 at the end of the fourth. SFA was able to take the lead in the sixth inning after Nguyen hit her second single of the day, Sydnee Hebert walked, and Mackenzie Bennett hit a triple to right center, 2-1.
The hot bats continued for the Lumberjacks in the top of the seventh. Lexi Benson got on base first with a single through the right side, then Mallory Webb was subed in as a pinch runner and stole second base which put her in scoring position. Nguyen recorded her third hit of the game which was a single up the middle which scored Webb, 3-1. Gaby Garcia stepped up to the plate and hit a home run to left field which scored Nguyen and herself to extend the lead to 5-1. Alexis Telford closed out the game in the seventh inning on the mound for the Lumberjacks.
Nguyen led the Ladyjacks offense by going 3-4 with two runs and one RBI. Bennett followed with a 2-4 performance with two RBIs, Garcia also recorded two RBIs and a walk. Telford pitched a complete game only allowing four hits, one earned run, and recorded eight strikeouts. Middlebrook, Nguyen, and Webb each recorded one stolen base.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action Saturday, February 11th at 10:30 a.m. for another matchup with Lafayette College and a 1:00 p.m. matchup with host Louisiana-Lafayette.
