LAFAYETTE, La. - Stephen F. Austin finishes the day with a 8-0 win against Lafayette College and a 12-1 loss against #24 University of Louisiana. The Lumberjacks move to 2-1 while the Leopards fall to 0-3 and the Ragin' Cajuns improve to 2-0.
GAME 1: SFA wins 8-0
It was a pitcher's duel for the first three innings as both teams failed to put a run on the board in the first half of the game. That all changed in the fourth inning when Gaby Garcia started off the inning with a leadoff double. A couple of batters later, Mackenzie Bennett put the first runs of the game up with a two-run homer to left field. Lexi Benson kept the momentum going and followed Bennett with a home run of her own, as the 'Jacks went back-to-back to take an 3-0 lead going into the fifth.
The scoring didn't stop there as Madison Nguyen recorded an RBI triple to right center, which brought in Camryn Middlebrook who reached on an a fielding error right before Nguyen's triple. Garcia's bat stayed hot as she hit her second home run of the weekend to left field bringing the score to 6-0. Following a couple of Lumberjack walks and a single, pinch-hitter Emily Land reached on an error by the Lafayette centerfielder which scored pinch-runners Alex Dubose and Arwin Callaway. Due to it being the fifth inning, Land's ball ended the game, as SFA run-ruled the Leopards.
Sophie Hannabas dominated in the pitcher's circle for the Lumberjacks as she held the Leopards from putting any runs on the board in the five innings played. Hannabas recorded four strikeouts, allowed seven hits, and only one walk. Garcia and Bennett both went 2-3 with two RBI's on the game, while Nguyen also went 2-3 with one RBI.
GAME 2: University of Louisiana Wins 12-1
Game two was a different story for the Lumberjacks as they struggled to contain the bats of the ranked #24 Cajuns. The Cajuns put up 12 runs off of 12 hits, scoring four runs in three of the four innings they came up to bat. The Lumberjacks scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth, when Sydnee Hebert drove in Madison Nguyen with a hard-hit single that bounced off the top of the wall. This game also ended in five innings as the Cajuns run-ruled the 'Jacks.
Nguyen continues to start the season off hot as she went 3-3 in game 2 and Hebert rounded out the rest of the 'Jack's hits by going 2-2 with SFA's lone RBI.
