SFA celebrates namesake’s birthday with win in 27th straight home opener
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A 57-point first half sent Stephen F. Austin on its way in game one of season 100 on Monday afternoon inside William R. Johson Coliseum as the Lumberjacks placed four players in double-figure scoring led by a game-high 20 points from Keon Thompson to dispatch Millsaps 103-76 for first-year head coach Matt Braeuer's first career victory.
The 'Jacks (1-0) shot 48.1% from the floor and utilized a near 40% success rate from beyond-the-arc, highlighted by a 6-for-9 effort from deep by Lateef Patrick, to ease past the Majors in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
Nineteen first-half points off turnovers (+11) and 18 second chance points (+14) in the opening twenty minutes staked the 'Jacks to an early advantage as SFA never trailed in the contest. The Lumberjacks manufactured a 23-4 lead down near the 13-minute mark of the first half as six different 'Jacks got in on the scoring act to open the 19-point lead.
Millsaps would get as close as a dozen during the remainder of the first half, while the 'Jacks largest lead of the frame came moments before the intermission as Thompson delivered back-to-back inside buckets with the second coming in transition as Chrishawn Christman forced a turnover at the top of the key before delivering the outlet to Thompson who finished off glass as the first half came to a close.
The lead grew to as large as 30 points just past the under-8 media timeout of the second half. Jerald Colonel nearly recorded a double-double in the second half alone as he matched rookie Marcus Scurry in points with nine and added six rebounds over the final twenty minutes of play.
