Youth Plays Strong Role in Opening Day at Houston

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team recorded several strong performances in Friday's opening day of action at the Houston Invitational, led by the underclassmen. Freshman Jessica Hatchett clocked a time of 58.90 to finish second overall in the women's 400-meter dash `B' final. Junior Cass Brown-Stewart posted a similar finish in the men's 200-meter `B' final. He clocked a time of 22.26 to post a runner-up finish.
Sophomore Shawn Goff posted a top-five finish in the men's 400 `B' final. He finished the race with a time of 51.35 to place third overall. Colby McCune also recorded a third-place finish in the men's 5,000 meters (15.27.93).
The SFA men's and women's distance medley relay teams posted identical third-place finishes. The men's team of Hunter Russell, Simba Walker-Williams, Cameron Courtney and Xavier Rodriguez posted a time of 10:12.58, while Katrina Fite, Cierra Jefferson, DeJernel Jordan and Randi Plentl posted a 12:18.22.
In the field events sophomore La'Tricia Griffin placed fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 56-4.75. Senior Jon Arthur was fourth overall with his throw of 58-10.00. The 'Jacks placed two athletes in the top five of the men's long jump `B' finals. Trey Darty was fourth overall (22-6.25) while DeAndre Burns was fifth 22-0.75. Sophomore Jessica Cunningham posted a strong height of 12-1.50 to place fourth in the women's pole vault.
Freshman Jamal Davis enters the final day of the heptathlon fourth overall with 2,742 points. Davis enters Saturday's final events less than 140 points behind the overall leader.
