Ladyjacks Win Three Titles at ISU

AMES, Iowa - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks recorded three individual titles Friday on the second day of competition at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. The Ladyjacks victories came in the 200-meter dash, pole vault and shot put.
Sophomore Brarsheyia Simpson landed SFA's first title of the when she clocked a time of 55.71 to win the women's 400-meter dash. Classmate Jessica Cunningham posted the Ladyjacks' second title of the day. She cleared a height of 11-8.00 to win the event by nearly six inches. Sophomore La'Tricia Griffin won the women's shot put with a throw of 46-4.25.
The Lumberjacks placed two runners in the top four of the men's mile run. Senior Hunter Russell recorded a time of 4:14.85 to place third just ahead of teammate Cameron Courtney who was fourth with 4:17.58.
In a similar fashion the Ladyjacks landed two runners in the top five of the women's 600-yard run. Sophomore DeJernel Jordan was third overall with a time of 1:25.61, while freshman Valerie Osamar was fifth (1:26.58).
Senior Jon Arthur was one of SFA's strongest field athletes Friday. He recorded a throw of 59-2.00 to finish fourth in the weight throw. Sophomore La'Tricia Griffin placed fifth in the women's weight throw with her mark of 57-3.75. Freshman Abbey Weaver cleared the second-best height in the women's pole vault, but finish fourth based on the tie break.
Sophomore Derek Calvert just missed an individual title in the shot put. He recorded a toss of 52-9.25 to finish second overall. Freshman Bryce Willard was another strong Lumberjack performer Friday as well. Willard cleared a height of 6-6.25 to finish third in the event. Willard's mark was the same as the individual champion, but he was third based on the tie break.
The SFA men and women will close out the Iowa State Classic Saturday with the final day of competition.
