The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team recorded four individual titles, two relay titles and set a school record Saturday at the J.D. Martin/OU Invitational in Norman, Okla. Sophomore Brarsheyia Simpson recorded the biggest highlight of the afternoon by clocking a school-record time of 24.47 to win the women's 200-meter dash.
The Ladyjacks other individual title came in the triple jump. Senior Kelli Hermes recorded a mark of 39-9.25 to win the event.
The 'Jacks individual wins came in the weight throw and 200-meter dash. Senior Jon Arthur recorded a throw of 62-6.00 in the weight, while Cass Brown-Stewart clocked a time of 21.97 to win the 200 meters.
The SFA duo returned to action to record a couple of top-five finishes as well. Arthur finished third in the shot put with his throw of 58-10.75. Brown-Stewart clocked a time of 6.851 to finish fourth in the 60-meter hurdles.
Brown-Stewart was one of three 'Jacks to finish in the top five of the men's 200-meter dash. Freshman Trevon Caudle recorded a time of 22.39 to finish second, while junior Torin Crowder was fourth overall (22.43). The SFA men also had two athletes place in the top five of the high jump. Freshman Stephen Kinney was third by clearing a height of 6-2.00, just edging out teammate Bryce Willard who finished with a mark of 6-0.00.
The SFA women had multiple athletes in finish among the top five in the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Cierra Jefferson recorded a time of 57.289 to place third, while freshman Jessica Hatchett was fifth (57.60).
Sophomore La'Tricia Griffin recorded two top-five finishes for the Ladyjacks. She was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 46-9.50. She returned to the circle to record a fifth-place finish in the weight throw (54-4.75).
Other top-five finishes for the Ladyjacks came from junior Kirsten Knox, sophomore Bria McIver, sophomore DeJernel Jordan and sophomore Keisha Tryon. Knox recorded a jump of 18-9.00 to finish third in the long jump, while McIver was third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.80). Tryon finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.37. Jordan finished fourth in the 800 meters with her time of 2:21.24.
Other Lumberjacks to finish in the top five of their respective events consisted of junior Jamal Peden, junior Hampton Hawkins, senior Nick McCloud, senior Xavier Rodriguez, sophomore Shawn Goff and freshman Kendall Wheatley. McCloud just missed an individual title with his time of 8.00 to finish second. Goff also recorded a runner-up finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.86, missing the individual title by 41-hundredths of a second. Peden was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 23-8.00. Hawkins was third in the 400 meters with his time of 49.58. Rodriguez was third overall in the mile with a time of 4:20.95. Wheatley was third in the men's triple jump with his mark of 47-9.25.
SFA returns to action Friday when they will be back in Norman, Okla., for the 2013 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The championship meet is slated to begin at Friday when the opening events of the pentathlon and the heptathlon.
