The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team had 10 athletes earn all-conference honors, and set a school record on the first day of competition at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Norman, Okla., Friday evening. The Ladyjacks jumped out to an early lead, 49.5 - 38, while the SFA men are second place overall entering Saturday's final day of action.
The Ladyjacks recorded six all-conference honors, and set a school record in the distance medley relay, while the `Jacks had three All-SLC honors. The school record marked the second time this season the Ladyjacks have set a new school standard in the event.
The Ladyjacks dominated the high jump event placing five athletes in the finals. Freshman Melai Carter led SFA with an all-conference performance. Carter finished second in the event by clearing a height of 5-7.00. Junior Carrie Hahn led a trio of Ladyjacks who finished with a mark of 5-5.00. Hahn finished tied for fifth with senior Megan Harlan, while freshman Ashley Gadson was seventh. Sophomore Heather McPherson snuck into the finals with an eighth-place finish (5-3.00). The Ladyjacks scored 18 points in the event.
The Ladyjacks had similar showing in the 5,000-meter run. SFA placed three athletes in the top-eight led by sophomore Lauren Smith who earned all-conference honors with her second-place finish (17:02.54). Junior Randi Plentl clocked a time of 17:48.17 to finish sixth overall, while sophomore Laurie Byrd added an eighth-place finish (17:50.51).
In similar fashion, the `Jacks posted big points in the men's 5,000 meters. Junior Adam Saloom just missed an individual title by clocking a time of 14:50.07 to finish second overall. Classmate Xavier Rodriguez was only 10 seconds back of Saloom to finish fourth overall (14:59.59).
Sophomore Jamal Peden recorded a strong performance in the long jump. The `Jacks first all-conference performance of the day, Peden recorded a mark of 24-0.75 to finish third overall. Sophomore Clint Harris tacked on another all-conference performance for the SFA men. Harris finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 60-6.50.
Senior Megan Harlan recorded a fifth-place finish in the pentathlon. Harlan scored 3,503 points to land among the overall top five. Senior Andrew Plentl and freshman Cody Rhodes are in position to score big points in the heptathlon. Plentl enters the final day of competition second overall (2,916 points), and Rhodes is eighth (2,500).
The track events finished with the running of the men's and women's distance medley relay. The Ladyjacks team of seniors Danielle Burchett, Lauren Watts and Katrina Turner, and Smith finished second overall (11:59.48) to earn all-conference honors. The Ladyjacks missed a conference title by less than three-tenths of a second, but shattered the school record by more than 20 seconds.
The `Jacks' team of junior Hunter Russell, sophomore Torin Crowder, junior Jonus Rodriguez and sophomore Nathan Collier finished fourth with a time of 10:16.36.
Sophomore Kirsten Knox closed out the first day of field events with an All-SLC performance in the women's long jump. She recorded a mark of 19-2.75 to finish second overall.
SFA returns to action Saturday morning to close out the conference championships. Competition begins at 8:30 a.m. with the final events of the heptathlon.
