Jon Arthur sets school record in Ruston, La.

The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team jumped out to a great start in the 2013 outdoor season opener Saturday at the Jim Mize Invitational in Ruston, La. The SFA men and women combined for seven individual titles, one relay title and a school record.
Senior thrower Jon Arthur set the tone for the squad winning two events and a setting a new school record in the shot put. Arthur won the men's hammer throw with a mark of 192-4. He returned to the circle to launch a throw of 61-3.00 in the shot put, besting the old school mark by a foot.
Classmate Nick McCloud added to the victory total by winning the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.63. Shawn Goff got into the act with his victory in the 400 meters (48.21). Goff returned to the track to help the 'Jacks record a victory in the 1,600-meter relay. He joined teammates Hampton Hawkins, Torin Crowder and Cass Brown-Stewart as they recorded a time of 3:14.05 for the win.
The Ladyjacks added three titles to the haul as well. Madison Johnston won the javelin with her mark of 153-0. Senior Kellie Hermes recorded a leap of 39-1.75 to win the triple jump, while Ericka Taylor closed out SFA's list of titles by taking the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.38.
SFA is slated to be back in action Tuesday and Wednesday when it sends its multi-event athletes to Houston for the Rice Multis competition.
