Handful of Athletes Compete at WSU

WICHITA, Kansas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the 2012 Bracket Buster Invitational Friday in four distance events, and came away with an individual title and a host of top-five finishes.

Sophomore Laurie Byrd took top honors in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. She recorded a time of 11:26.57 to win the event. Freshman Moses Luevano was the `Jacks top finisher in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. He clocked a time of 9:45.12 to finish third overall.

The Ladyjacks just missed a second individual title when senior Randi Plentl recorded a time of 17:25.53 to finish second overall in the women's 5,000 meters. Plentl edged out Lauren Smith who was third with her time of 17:40.74.

Junior Harmon McClanahan was the Lumberjacks' top 5,000-meter runner Friday. He finished third overall with a time of 14:59.74 in the event, placing just ahead of teammate Dennis Yeats (15:06.57).

The SFA men and women return to action Saturday with the second and final day of the Bracket Buster Invitational.
