AUSTIN, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team had five athletes in action Thursday on the opening day of the NCAA West Region Preliminary round in Austin, Texas. Two of those athletes advanced to the Friday semifinals.

Sophomore Cass Brown clocked a time of 47.29 to finish 25th overall in the preliminary round of the men's 400-meter dash qualifying for the semifinals. Senior Mary Dickerson was nearly a carbon copy of Brown. She recorded a time of 54.64 to finish 25th advancing to the semifinals as well.

The most heartbreaking performance of the day was by that of senior Danielle Burchett in the women's 800 meters. Burchett ran a strong 2:09.00 in the race, but finished 28th overall just missing a qualifying mark by .07 of a second. She was the top finisher not to advance to the semifinals.

Second day of action begins Friday at 11 a.m. with the women's discus. Track events will begin at 5 p.m. with the men's 110-meter hurdles.
