The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the 2013 NCAA West Preliminary Saturday in Austin, Texas. SFA ended the meet with a bang as sophomore Madison Johnston, and the Lumberjacks' 4x400-meter relay team earned a berth to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships next month in Eugene, Ore.
Johnston punched her ticket by finishing eighth in the javelin with a throw of 160-6. Johnston became the third SFA athlete, first Ladyjack, to qualify for the 2013 NCAA Championships. The 'Jacks 4x400-meter relay team of Shawn Goff, Torin Crowder, Josh Taylor and Cass Brown-Stewart added their names to that list when they recorded a time of 3:06.98 to finish ninth overall.
Classmate La'Tricia Griffin finished 30th overall in the women's shot put with a throw of 50-4.00. Junior Jamal Peden finished his second event of the meet Saturday and just missed qualifying for the championship meet. He recorded a jump of 50-7.50 to place 19th.
Senior Adam Saloom competed in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase late Friday evening. He finished the season with a 26th-place finish in the event (8:59.74).
The Lumberjacks will be sending two athletes, and the relay team to Eugene, Ore., while the Ladyjacks will be sending a sophomore in the javelin. Following up his NCAA appearance at the indoor meet, senior Jon Arthur will be heading to the outdoor national championship meet in the shot put, while junior Cass Brown-Stewart will be competing as an individual (400 meters) and will run the anchor leg of the 'Jacks' 1,600-meter relay. It will be the first time in Johnston's career she will compete at the NCAA Championships, while Brown-Stewart will be competing in his first individual event. The NCAA Outdoor Championships will begin Wednesday, June 5 in Eugene, Ore.
