NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin track and field team will have a small group of Lumberjacks open the 2014 indoor season this weekend at one of the premier events in the nation for their event. Three pole vaulters are headed to the Akron Pole Vault Convention to take on some of the top athletes in the nation.
Senior Colton Ross, junior Cameron Meyer and freshman Daven Murphree will all compete. Ross and Murphree will compete in the elite pole vault competition that will feature 2013 USATF champion Jordan Scott and 2012 NCAA champion Jack Whitt, formerly of Oral Roberts.
In all, 11 men and women will compete in the elite pole vaults at the meet on Saturday with a handful of USA and NCAA titles represented in the groups.
Ross is a USTFCCCA Second Team All-American from last season after finishing 15th at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a mark of 5.30 meters (17-4.50). Murphree is the 2013 New Balance National High School Champion and was the No. 1 ranked pole vaulter out of high school last year. He will be making his SFA debut.
Meyer, an All-Southland Conference member, is listed as an alternate for the elite competition if an athlete is unable to compete. He also is slated for the open pole vault event to be held on Sunday.
Akron’s annual Pole Vault Convention is an event that brings together some of the best athletes and coaches in the nation for the event into one place. In addition to the full meet on Friday and the pole vault competitions over the weekend, the convention also features clinics and speaking events with some of the best in the world. This year’s convention will feature 2004 Olympic gold medalist Tim Mack and former American record holder Jeff Hartwig as guest speakers.
