NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The 2014 indoor track and field season is set to start this weekend for the defending Southland Conference champion Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks. SFA will compete at the Houston Indoor Opener on Saturday with a full slate on the schedule for both teams.
Head Coach Phil Olson and his team will take on a number of familiar foes this weekend with fellow Southland teams Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar also opening their year at Houston along with other regional teams.
SFA will have the majority of its sprinters in action with school record holder Brarysheyia Simpson leading the way for the women’s squad in the 60 meters. Five women and three men will run the 60 meters for SFA with a large group competing in the 200 and 400 as well.
Sophomore Chasity Clark also is one of SFA’s top sprinters, winning the Southland Conference title in the 200 meters last year and will open her campaign this weekend as well.
The mid-distance group will bring a good number to the track to open the year as well with six men and women running in the 800 meters.
Field events is where the ‘Jacks will look to continue building off a strong 2013 season. Defending conference champion Melai Carter hopes to start her 2014 season well in the high jump along with fellow all-conference teammate Heather McPherson.
League champion shot putter La’Tricia Griffin will lead a group of throwers into action this weekend. Sophomore Jessica Spelling finished in second place behind Griffin last year at the conference championship and will open her season as well.
Last year, the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks won the Southland Conference Championship indoors and are looking for a repeat performance in 2014. The women’s team has won five straight indoor and outdoor conference titles to set a Southland record of 10 consecutive track and field team titles.
All three women who won individual titles last season are back for more in 2014, and all four of the men’s 4x400 relay team that won the Southland title indoors return as well.
Action at the Houston Indoor Opener begins at 11 a.m. with field events. Running events are set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Yeoman Fieldhouse in Houston. Live results will be available from the meet online at flashresultstexas.com.
