NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – After two shining performances last week at the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational, the Stephen F. Austin women’s track and field team swept Southland Conference Athlete of the Week honors. Brarysheyia Simpson was named track athlete of the week while thrower La’Tricia Griffin earned field athlete of the week.
Simpson broke her second school record in as many weeks, this time winning the 200 meters in 24.11 seconds. Her time shredded more than three-tenths off her own previous school record and earned 10 points toward the team scoring. Simpson also ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x400 relay team that clocked in at 3:45.42.
Griffin won both throwing events at the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational to score a total of 20 points individually for the team as the Ladyjacks cruised to the team victory. Griffin won the shot put with her mark of 45-4.50 and bested the field in the weight throw with a toss of 56-1.75.
This marks the first awards of the season for the women’s or men’s teams with indoor season only a few weeks old. The Ladyjacks are off this week and will join their male teammates next week at the Varsity Apartments Invitational hosted by Wichita State.
