NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin track and field team returns to action this week for a two-day meet and will face a number of strong mid-major and junior college programs. The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks head to the Varsity Apartments Invitational hosted by Wichita State.
Action starts Friday morning with the first events of the pentathlon and heptathlon. This will be the first multi-event of the season for SFA and head coach Phil Olson will have two women entered in the pentathlon and four men in the heptathlon.
Last season, Shambrail Woods finished fourth at the Southland Conference Championship in the pentathlon, and Cody Rhodes was runner-up in the heptathlon. Both will be making their season debuts in the multis after competing in individual events leading up to this week.
“This week provides us with a look at our multi-event athletes in competition for the first time. It is a good group and potentially a deep group,” Olson said. “We are also moving forward by evaluating who will be on our 28-man rosters for the conference meet a month from now. Every meet is important from here on out.”
The Varsity Apartments Invitational will be a team scored meet similar to conference championships but with a slightly different scoring system. The team scoring will give SFA another opportunity to test itself against strong mid-major competition.
Wichita State’s women won the Missouri Valley Conference last year while the Shocker men finished second. UT-Arlington’s men finished second in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago and will be contenders in the Sun Belt Conference this year.
Other teams competing against SFA will be Oral Roberts, Butler County Community College, Iowa Central CC and Missouri State’s women.
The meet will be live streamed on goshockers.com. A meet central page also is available on the website with links to heat sheets, facility records for the Heskett Center and more. Updates will also be available on Twitter by following @WichitaSt_TFXC and @SFA_XC.
