NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin track and field hits the road again this weekend for another two-day meet. The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks are headed to the Samford Mutli and Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
Sprinters will open the meet for SFA on Friday night in the 200 meters. The `Jacks will not compete in the multi-events, weight throw or distance events slated for Friday. Saturday will be a full day for SFA, except throwing events, with athletes up against a number of teams from the South and a handful of teams from the Southland Conference.
The meet will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex, a fairly new facility that features one of the few indoor tracks in the nation with a Mondo surface. Head Coach Phil Olson and his staff are looking forward to the meet at the CrossPlex because the Southland Conference is hosting its Indoor Track and Field Championships there later this month.
Getting familiar with the surface and the facility will help the athletes be comfortable and know what to expect come time for the conference championship in three weeks.
Fellow Southland schools New Orleans, Sam Houston State, Central Arkansas and McNeese State are slated to compete at the Samford Multi and Invitational to also scout the facility in preparation for the Southland Championship.
This week's competition will not be a team scored meet after SFA had a number of successes early in the season at team scored meets. Instead, the focus will be on individual performances and progressing through training and competition.
With the conference championship three weeks away the coaching staff will be eyeing the individual performances to help narrow the travel squad down as only 28 athletes per gender can compete at the conference meet.
