Feb. 11, 2012
The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams recorded five school records, won an individual title and recorded several top-10 finishes Saturday afternoon on the final day of competition at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. The SFA men recorded two school records and brought home an individual title in the triple jump, while the Ladyjacks tacked on three school records.
Sophomore Nathan Collier paced the Lumberjack attack by breaking a record that had stood since the 1984 season. Collier clocked a time of 4:11.36 to finish ninth overall in the men's mile, eclipsing a record that had stood since the 1984 season (Chris Bloor). The team of sophomores Hampton Hawkins, Torin Crowder and Cass Brown and freshman Glenn McQuinney clocked a time of 3:10.00 in the men's 4x400-meter relay to place fourth.
The SFA relay teams weren't finished breaking records. The Ladyjacks' 1,600-meter relay stepped on the track following the men and duplicated their record-breaking performance. The team of Paige McCutcheon, Cierra Jefferson, Brarsheyia Simpson and Mary Dickerson crossed the line fourth with a time of 3:43.04 to set a new school record for the second time this season.
Senior Danielle Burchett added to the program's list of school records that have fallen during the 2012 indoor season, eclipsing her personal record in the 800 meters. Burchett finished ninth in the event with a time of 2:11.88. Lauren Smith tacked on the Ladyjacks' third school record of the day when she posted a time of 16:42.71 to finish seventh in the women's 5,000 meters.
Sophomore Jamal Peden just missed a school record in the triple jump. He recorded a mark of 51-2.75 to win the event, while sophomore Chelsea Stephen just missed an individual title in the 60-meter hurdles. Stephen clocked a time of 8.61 to record the runner-up finish.
Freshman Melai Carter led a trio of Ladyjacks to top-10 finishes in the high jump. Carter cleared a height of 5-6.50 to finish fourth in the event, while teammates Ashley Gadson and Carrie Hahn cleared heights of 5-4.50 to finish in a three-way tie for sixth overall. Sophomore Kirsten Knox recorded a jump of 18-6.50 to finish fifth in the long jump. Senior Xavier Rodriguez recorded a time of 14:29.31 to place eighth in the 5,000 meters.
SFA returns to action Saturday, Feb. 18, when they travel to Norman, Okla., when they will compete in the J.D. Martin/OU Invitational.
