SFA men's and women's teams return to Norman, for Okla., to open SLC meet.
Feb. 21, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
Less than a week after competing at the J.D. Martin/OU Invitational, the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams will be returning to Norman, Okla., Friday and Saturday to compete in the Southland Conference Championships. The meet will begin at the Mosier Indoor Complex at 8:30 a.m. The meet will begin with the opening events of the pentathlon and heptathlon events.
The Ladyjacks enter the meet having set a new precedent for dominance in the Southland Conference. SFA won four-straight conference indoor titles, including a league record eight-straight overall titles (four indoor and four outdoor titles). The Lumberjacks are looking for their first indoor titles since 2005, but SFA is the last current league member to win a conference title.
SFA's women return several key members from the 2012 squad, including last year's high-point scorer Lauren Smith. In addition to the team's returning talent, the Ladyjacks have some underclassmen that have stepped up this season. Sophomore Brarsheyia Simpson enters the meet holding SLC's best time in the 60-meter and 200-meter dash. Simpson set the school records in both events last week in Norman.
The Lumberjacks are also among the favorites for the 2013 title. Juniors Cass Brown-Stewart and Jamal Peden return from strong campaigns last year to lead the 'Jacks. Brown-Stewart recorded the second-fastest time SLC Championship history to win the 400-meter dash, while Peden took top billing in the men's triple jump. Both athletes will compete in multiple events, and will be aided by the return of several top athletes who redshirted last season. The 'Jacks also return one of the league's top throwers in Jon Arthur, who set a new school record in the shot put earlier this season. In addition to Arthur, SFA also returns NCAA participant Nick McCloud in the hurdles and Colton Ross in the pole vault.
