FRISCO, Texas -
The honors came pouring in for the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack track and field team following its fourth consecutive Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field title, and its seventh consecutive overall, last week in Norman, Okla. Sophomore distance runner Lauren Smith was named SLC Female Athlete of the Year, Outstanding Track Athlete of the Year and High-Point Scorer, while jumper Melai Carter was named SLC Freshman of the Year and Phil Olson was named women's conference coach of the year.
Smith turned in one of the most impressive indoor track performances in program history winning a conference title in the 3,000 meters, while posting a conference runner-up finish in the 5,000 meters. To put a cap on her dominant performance, Smith returned to the track to run the anchor leg of the women's distance medley relay guiding SFA to a runner-up finish. Smith scored 20 points at the meet, which turned out to be the difference in the meet.
Carter jumped into the spotlight for SFA after her all-conference performance in the high jump. Carter cleared a height of 5-7.00 in the event to finish second overall.
In what has become routine for the SFA head coach, Olson was named the league's top women's head coach. It was the 12th time in his 13-year career that Olson has received the honor. A former USTCA District Coach of the Year, Olson's Ladyjacks will go in search of their fourth consecutive outdoor title in May.
