NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Two members of the Stephen F. Austin track and field team opened their outdoor campaigns with some of the top marks in the nation over the weekend and were recognized by the Southland Conference for their performances.
Josh Taylor and Madison Johnston both were named SLC Athlete of the Week for the efforts in leading the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks to impressive opening weekends for the outdoor season.
Taylor ran a new personal best time of 51.57 seconds to win the 400 meter hurdles at the Alabama Relays to be named Men’s Track Athlete of the Week. He shaved more than half a second off his previous best time in the event and is currently ranked third in the nation early in the season.
Taylor ended his weekend on the 4x400 relay team running the third leg on a relay that posted the fastest time in the nation this season, crossing the line in 3:07.38 to win the Alabama Relays.
Johnston opened her outdoor season with a win in the javelin at the Alabama Relays and broke her own school record, earning Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. Johnston posted a mark of 49.39 meters (162 feet) to break her school record set last year by one centimeter. She dominated the field at the Alabama Relays and currently was sixth on the national list at the time of her throw. She is now eighth.
SFA’s track and field team will divide up for three different meets this week. A small group will head to the 87th Texas Relays in Austin with ‘Jacks beginning their action on Thursday. Another group is competing at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational, and more ‘Jacks are set for the Rice Bayou Classic.
