FRISCO, Texas -
Stephen F. Austin head coach Phil Olson, sophomore Jamal Peden and junior Lauren Smith were honored by the Southland Conference for their efforts at the 2012 SLC Outdoor meet last week in San Marcos. Olson has been named SLC Women's Coach of the Year, while Peden received SLC Male Outstanding Field Athlete recognition and Smith earned SLC Female Outstanding Track Athlete honors.
Olson garnered coach of the year honors following the Ladyjacks 2.5-point victory over UTSA to capture their fourth-straight SLC Outdoor title, and their eighth consecutive overall. The win assured the SFA Class of 2012 a perfect career having never lost and indoor or outdoor conference title. SFA also became the first program in conference history to win eight consecutive indoor and outdoor titles. It is the 13th time in his career that Olson has received the honor.
Peden gave the SFA men a strong boost in the field events winning two titles. Peden took the long jump title with a mark of 25-8.75. He posted a jump of 52-6.00 in the triple to win both events by more than a foot.
Smith recorded two upsets to post individual titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. She recorded a time of 17:24.55 to win the 5,000 meters by more than a second. She won the 10,000 meters going away with her time of 36:13.32. Her win was more than 13 seconds faster than the next closest competition. Smith finished the meet as the women's high-point scorer.
