The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack track and field team won the 2003 Southland Conference Outdoor title Monday defeating Southwest Texas, 157.5-126.5, to win their first-ever title. The Lumberjacks scored 68 points to finish fifth.
The Ladyjacks were led by a couple of athletes who picked up their second individual title. Sophomore Ana Rodriguez recorded a time of 18:22.97 to win the 5,000 meters. In the discus, junior Blake Gordon recorded a mark of 157-00 to win the event. Sophomore Jocelyn Stevens scored 10 points for the Ladyjacks in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the event with a time of 1:00.89. Stevens also recorded a sixth-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles (14.39).
Senior Jessica Claiborne had outstanding day for the Ladyjacks as she earned all-conference honors in the triple jump with her mark of 41-8.00. Claiborne also scored in the 100 meters (11.84), 200 meters (24.57) and as a member of the 4X100-meter relay team on Monday. Senior Katie Lonergan added four points to the SFA tally with her fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.52). Classmate Destine Rawls threw the discus 146-04 to finish eighth. Two Ladyjacks earned All-Southland Conference honors in the javelin throw. Freshman Sarah Emerson threw a personal best 157-04 to finish second in the event. Emerson's mark was also an NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Classmate Kasie Query followed up Emerson's throw with a mark of 150-05 to finish third. Query added a fifth-place finish in the pole vault when she cleared a height of 11-4.25. Junior Jennifer Schreiner earned All-Southland Conference in the pole vault with her mark of 11-8.00. She finished tied for third. The Ladyjacks 4X100-meter relay team of Shametra Boykins, Stevens, Melody Tillman and Stevina Wyatt earned All-SLC honors with the league runner-up finish, crossing the line with a time of 3:43.67. Boykins also finished second in the triple jump with her school-record jump of 41-9.25.
"It was an unbelievable day," said SFA head coach Phil Olson. "We had some events where we thought we could do some things and it seemed like in every event we were getting the job done. This team has come a long way in the past three years. They did everything they needed to do to win and they deserve it. Our kids did a great job today."
The Lumberjacks were led by Justin Meier who earned All-Southland Conference honors in the 1,500 meters with his time of 3:58.59. His time was good enough for third place. Classmate Mike Thompson finished sixth in the event (4:00.83) while Clifton Tierney posted a seventh-place finish (4:01.82). Junior Nathan Flores earned all-conference honors with his third-place finish in the 5,000 meters (15:06.76). Freshman Julian Acuna finished fourth in the race (15:14.14) while Meier crossed the finish line fifth (15:14.38). Thomas Williams scored points for SFA with his eighth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (10.88). Freshman Kenneth McKinley finished seventh in the javelin throw recording a mark of 198-10.
SFA will be back in action Friday May 30 through Saturday May 31st at the NCAA Regional Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
