SFA Track & Field Names Team Co-MVPs
June 30, 2013
The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team named co-MVPs announced head coach Phil Olson Sunday afternoon. Senior distance runner Lauren Smith and sophomore thrower La'Tricia Griffin received Ladyjack team MVP honors, while senior thrower Jon Arthur and junior sprinter Cass Brown-Stewart earn men's co-MVP recognition.
The SFA men and women dominated the Southland Conference in 2013 sweeping the conference indoor and outdoor track and field titles. It marked a conference record 10th consecutive title for the Ladyjacks (five indoors and five outdoors).
Arthur capped his career by advancing to the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships this past season. A second-team outdoor track and field All-American, Arthur set school records, and won league titles in shot put and hammer throw.
Arthur was just as dominant during the indoor season taking the conference titles in the shot put and weight throw. The school record holder in the indoor shot put, he also advanced to the national indoor meet in the event.
Brown-Stewart turned in one of the most electrifying seasons in school history. He finished the year with six all-league honors, three conference titles, two All-America honors and numerous school records. After winning the conference outdoor 400-meter title, and rallying the 'Jacks' 1,600-meter relay team to an outdoor conference title, Brown-Stewart set his sights on the National Championships where he earned third-team All-America honors as member of the relay team, and first-team All-America honors with his seventh-place finish in the men's 400 meters.
Brown-Stewart had one more highlight remaining for SFA fans in 2013. His school-record time of 45.62 in the semifinals also guaranteed him a spot at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where he placed 28th overall.
Smith has been one of the league's top distance runners during the course of her career. She recorded five top-four finishes, including three all-conference honors in 2013. Smith's three All-SLC honors came in the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meters and outdoor 10,000 meters where she recorded runner-up finishes. She also added a fourth-place finish in the discus to help the 'Jacks secure the outdoor team title. Arthur earned All-America honors in the shot put during the outdoor season by finishing 13th in the event.
Griffin finished the season with two individual titles, and three all-conference honors. Griffin swept the conference titles in the shot put. She recorded a throw of 49-10.50 during the indoor season to take the title by more than a foot. She followed that up with a mark of 50-3.25 to win the event during the outdoor season, and eventually advanced to the NCAA First and Second Round meet in Austin, Texas. Griffin also added an all-conference honor in the discus throw with a third-place finish.
