MOMENT #14: Colton Ross Sets Nation's Top Pole Vault Mark

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Pole vaulter Colton Ross put together one of the most impressive seasons in Stephen F. Austin track and field history in 2014. The highlight of the year came at the Longhorn Invitational when he set a new school record of 5.70 meters (18-8.25).

His mark was the highest vault in the NCAA this year tying the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Champion Sam Kendricks of Ole Miss. Ross surpassed the previous school record of 5.58 meters (18-4.00) set by Adam Kuel in 2001. His mark also is the best in Southland Conference history.

The clearance of 5.70 was the world-leading mark at that point in the season and remains in the top 10 this year midway through the professional circuit.

Ross was a consistent force in his event throughout the season as he posted victories in five of his nine competitions. He also took second twice.

He opened the outdoor campaign with a second-place finish at the prestigious Longhorn Invitational behind Kendricks with a clearance of 5.50 meters (18-00.50). That sparked a string of impressive showings that included a meet record at the UCA Open and the Southland Conference Championship. Ross closed the season with a tie for 10th place at the NCAA Championship.

During the indoor season, Ross opened well at a special invitational event at the Akron Pole Vault Convention. He finished fifth in a battle with the top pole vaulters in the nation. He closed the indoor season with a win at the Southland Conference Championship with the Lumberjacks finishing 1-2-3 as teammates Cameron Meyer and Daven Murphree helped SFA dominate the event.

Ross was named the Outstanding Field Events Performer for the Year following the outdoor conference championship meet. He also earned Southland Conference Field Event Athlete of the Week twice outdoors following the Texas Relays and the Longhorn Invitational.
