Top 25 Moments of 2012-13 - No. 14
July 5, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Now that the school year is over, and before we begin the 2013-14 academic year, SFA athletics wanted to take a look back at the Top 25 Moments from the 2012-13 season.
No. 14Phil Olson. It is beyond obvious that SFA head track and field coach Phil Olson is a person, and not just a moment. But we would be remiss if we didn't include one of the university's all-time winningest coaches on our top 25 list - for all the moments he has provided fans of the purple and white.
Success for SFA track and field isn't something new for Olson. Lumberjack and Ladyjack fans have seen a consistent line of success since Olson took over the program 14 years ago, but he upped the ante in 2013. The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks won the conference track and field Triple Crown for the second time in threes after recording conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. The track and field titles marked the ninth and 10 consecutive team championships for the Ladyjack track and field team - a new conference record. If that success wasn't enough, the Lumberjacks joined the fray this past season recording a sweep of the league track and field titles. SFA became only the third school in conference history to sweep both the indoor and outdoor titles.
It came as no surprise to anyone when Olson made a clean sweep of the conference coach of the year honors. Olson's four coach of the year honors this season give him 17 for his career. He has now moved past Texas-Arlington's John Sauerhage for the most track and field coach of the year honors in Southland history.
As hard as it might be to believe, the story doesn't stop there. Olson success this past season didn't come to a stop at the conference level. SFA set a program record by sending nine athletes to the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships this season. In addition to that, SFA also set a record by recording five All-America honors in 2013 (four individuals and a relay), including first-team selection Cass Brown-Stewart. The final exclamation point to the 2013 season came in June when Brown-Stewart competed at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships seeking to earn a spot on the U.S. National team.
