EUGENE, Ore. – Riding momentum from an impressive showing freshman campaign at the Southland Conference Championships, Stephen F. Austin’s Jeffrey Weisheit closed the 2014 track and field season with a top 10 finish at the USA Junior Championships this weekend in Oregon.
Weisheit finished in ninth place in the 10,000 meters late Sunday night as he was among the top runners in the nation under 20 years old. He clocked in with a time of 32:28.56 not far off his personal best time set at the conference championship meet.
With his top 10 finish, Weisheit was the No. 2 runner from a school in the state of Texas, trailing only Texas A&M’s Austin Wells.
SFA’s Anthony Gallardo also ran at the USA Junior Championships but was unable to finish the race and officially received a DNF. Gallardo battled injuries and redshirted during SFA’s season outdoors.
Spots on Team USA for the IAAF World Junior Championships were on the line in Eugene over the weekend with the top two finishers in each event qualifying for the national team.
Despite not making Team USA, Weisheit and Gallardo will bring back the valuable experience of competing on the nation’s top stage back to Nacogdoches to prepare for cross country season this fall.
