NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head track and field coach Phil Olson announced the signing of 17 prospects to join his program. The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks added these recruits during the spring signing period and the newcomers will join their teammates this fall on campus.

The men’s squad welcomes nine new Lumberjacks to the team. Seven have signed out of high school, while two are transferring to SFA from powerhouse programs.

On the women’s side, the Ladyjacks add eight signees with one being a transfer from another major program.

“What a tremendous class of young men and women our coaches have signed to become Lumberjacks,” Olson said. “Although our numbers are smaller than last year’s signing class of 31, these 17 young men and women create a great deal of excitement for our program. Their commitment to SFA allows us to move forward with the goal of competing year after year for a Southland Conference championship and pursuing a top 25 finish at the NCAA Championships.”

Seven of the signees will be in the sprints group with assistant coach Sean Lonergan. The men in the group will help to bolster the Lumberjacks’ sprints group after the graduation of some key role players over the last few years. Two women join the sprints group in the signing class with a large group returning, but the new Ladyjacks will add to the quality and strength of the team in their areas, according to Lonergan.

Jumps and multi-events assistant coach Ron McCown is excited to be adding four women and one man to his group of athletes. He brings in three females from the high school ranks in the horizontal jumps and a national caliber pole vaulter in Kansas transfer Demi Payne. McCown returns Southland Conference champion Cody Rhodes in the decathlon and adds Arkansas transfer Hunter Hopkins to the mix for the men as well.

Head Coach Olson works with the throwers individually and has signed one on the men’s and women’s team. Both Kami Stockett and Kevin McKelvey were district champions in high school.

Cody Clark serves as the distance coach for SFA and is the head coach for cross country. His group has added one female and two men to the team. Brittany Innis signs with SFA out of Cedar Park, and the men welcome Christopher Williams from College Park High School in The Woodlands. The Lumberjacks also add transfer Charles Mathenge from cross country force Oklahoma State.
