Sept. 24, 2002
NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team selected team captains for the 2003 season announced head coach Phil Olson Tuesday. The Lumberjack captains are seniors Amlesom Teklai (Alexandria, Va.), Daniel Longoria (Mission, Texas) and junior Justin Connell (Troup, Texas). The Ladyjacks named seniors Blake Gordon (Gladewater, Texas), Tracy Schupp (Hallsville, Texas) and Mashay Utley (Houston, Texas) as team captains.
Teklai, who was also selected as the SFA cross country team captain, has jumped out to a quick start in the 2002 cross country season. Teklai has been the 'Jacks top runner in their first two meets of the season, including a second-place finish at the ULM Invite. Teklai earned All-Southland Conference honors at the 2001 conference meet, helping SFA to its first-ever league title. Longoria is a three-year letterwinner with SFA who competed in both the 100 and 200-meters at the outdoor conference championships last season. He was also a member of the 'Jacks 4X100-meter relay team that finished sixth in the league. Connell returns as one of the league's top decathletes. He finished second in the conference last season with a score of 6,852 points.
Gordon anchors the Ladyjacks throws squad. She was an All-SLC indoor honoree in the shot put last year. Schupp returns as the Ladyjacks' top threat in the heptathlon and pentathlon. Although she redshirted the 2002 outdoor season, Schupp was an All-Southland Conference honoree in the pentathlon. Utley is a two-time All-Southland Conference honoree, earning the honor as a member of the mile-relay team and in the 400m.
The SFA men's and women's track and field teams kick off the 2003 indoor season Jan. 18th, at the Houston Indoor Classic, in Houston, Texas.
