Stephen F. Austin is inducting a former standout on the hardwood, a football All-American and one of the Southland Conference's most successful track and field coaches into the 'Jacks of Honor Class of 2012. Phil Olson (track and field), Glenn Pearson (basketball) and Cedric Walker (football) will be inducted announced the SFA Lettermen's Association.
Olson has guided the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field programs for the past 13 seasons. During that time, SFA has reached a level of success never before seen in program history. A 13-time SLC Coach of the Year, SFA has recorded 21 conference titles in cross country and track and field under Olson, including a conference-record eight straight in women's track and field. A former district coach of the year selection, Olson has coached more than 500 All-SLC selections, more than 140 SLC individual champions and his athletes have set more than 200 school records. In addition to the conference honors, Olson's troops have produced better than 50 NCAA qualifiers with several All-Americans.
Pearson was a letterman for coach John O. Stephens' 1953-54 and 1954-55 teams that posted a 30-18 (.625) overall record and won the 1955 Lone Star Conference title. That squad went 18-4 (.818) on its way to the championship.
Walker was one of the best players in SFA football history. A four-year letterwinner in the early '90s, Walker helped produce one of the biggest turnarounds in school history. He sparked a defense that led SFA to an 8-4 (.667) record and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.
A four-time first-team All-SLC selection, Walker closed out his career by earning first-team All-America honors. He still holds the school's season and career records for interceptions.
